A
number of dams on the Ohio and Kanawha rivers manage
water resource by insuring sufficient water levels for
ships and barges traveling on the river. Each dam has
a set of associated locks to allow the passage of river
traffic. To control water flow, the gates in the dam
are raised and lowered by electric hoist motors. C&M
designed, built and installed a computer network at
each dam, allowing control and monitoring of each of
the gates either from a local operating station or from
the district office located miles away. A Programmable
Logic Controller at each gate controls and monitors
gate position. Control and status information pass through
fiber optic cable to central desktop computers at multiple
operator consoles.
